DIY Sofa Cleaning Guide

A sofa is a part of almost everyone’s homes because it is both the most comfortable and the most welcoming part of the house. The living room’s main attraction in the present time, the word sofa originated from the Arabic word suffah, meaning bench.

Everyone loves chilling on the sofa until it starts stinking or perhaps, you leave your favourite spot in the house with an ugly stain. Cleaning the sofa sounds complicated, but we’ve got a few steps to make the work easier and precise. Let’s have a look, shall we?

Learn The Fabric

Every couch comes with a tag, including the cleaning instructions for upholstery. It comes with specific codes that are meant to guide you for appropriate cleaning.

  • X: Use a vacuum only. No water.

  • W: You can use water to clean it.

  • S: Use a dry cleaner detergent only.

  • WS: Use a mild detergent with a steam vacuum or a dry-cleaning detergent.

It’s necessary to follow these instructions to avoid damages. We are all aware of how expensive sofas are, thus you need to maintain them.

Vacuum Clean

Vacuum Cleaning is a must for homes as they attract dust along with breeze. Irrespective of the type of fabric, almost every kind of sofa and other furniture at home is suited for vacuum cleaning. Why resort to vacuum cleaning? The space underneath the sofa collects a lot of dust and debris over time. If the sofa cushions aren’t attached, you need to take them off and clean thoroughly.

If you have a pet, regular vacuuming is essential as their fur sticks to the fabric on the sofa and can later pass on to your clothes when you sit on it in such situations, make use of a lint roller to roll to clean your sofa fabric. Lint rollers are designed to clean pet fur off sofa covers and clothes so regular rolling will help keep your sofas clean.

You can’t get away from stains. No matter how hard you try to eat without dropping on the sofa, you are going to spill something or the other in the silliest way possible. But don’t you worry, there are ways you can fix it well. You’re going to need a spray bottle, though.

  • For fabric upholstery

  • Mix ¼ cup of vinegar and ¾ cup of warm water.

  • Add one tablespoon for dish soap.

  • Put the mixture in a spray bottle and mist the stain.

  • Scrub with a soft cloth until the stain lifts. Then, take another cloth moistened with clean water to remove the soap.

  • Finally, wipe the surface dry with a towel.

  • For leather upholstery

  • Mix ½ cup of olive oil and ¼ cup of vinegar.

  • Spray the homemade cleaner on the surface of the sofa.

  • Lastly, buff the surface with a soft cloth.

  • For synthetic upholstery

  • Mix ½ cup of vinegar and 1 cup of warm water.

  • Add ½ tablespoon of dish soap in a spray bottle.

  • Mist the spoiled area

  • Scrub with a soft cloth until the stain is gone.

Clean The Wooden/Metal Surface

Now that you’re through with maximum of the cleaning, you got to look for wooden or metal areas that are exposed. You can dust them with a dry cloth, but if there’s dirt stuck to its surface, you can use warm water to do the job well.

Conclusion
